Housing dominates the substance of our cities. If we understand its programme as a tool that contributes to ways how we live together, housing can become a neighbourhood-machine, injecting new ways of living together. My lecture will unfold housing’s latent potential as an “urban substance” elaborating on projects which experiment with the interplay of typology, programme and economy. By focusing on projects from Vienna I will demonstrate the capacity of affordable housing as a central driving force of resilient urban developments.
